Mount Bromo
📍 East Java, ID
★ 5.0 (1)About This Destination
Watching the sun rise over Bromo's crater rim is one of those bucket-list moments people talk about for years — and for good reason. This still-active volcano sits in the middle of a vast, otherworldly sand sea, with jeeps kicking up trails of dust as the sky turns orange, pink, and gold behind Semeru in the distance. It's cold, it's early, and it's absolutely worth losing sleep for.
What We Do There?
Hop in a 4x4 jeep before dawn and race to Penanjakan viewpoint for the sunrise show, then head down into the sand sea itself — you can hike or hop on a horse up to the crater rim, where sulfur smoke still curls out of the ground. Don't skip a quick stop at Teletubbies Hill on the way back, it's exactly as cute as it sounds.
Unique / Point of Interest
The Penanjakan sunrise point (arrive early, it gets packed), the still-smoking active crater you can peer right into, and the surreal green hills locals nicknamed after a certain kids' show.
Travel Tips
- ✓Dry season (roughly April to October) usually gives the clearest sunrise views; the rainy season often brings cloud and mud.
- ✓It gets very cold before dawn at the viewpoint, so bring a warm jacket, gloves, and a beanie.
- ✓Sunrise tours leave in the middle of the night and the viewpoint fills up fast, so arrive early for a good spot.
- ✓Bring a mask or buff for the dust and sulfur smoke near the crater.
- ✓Wear sturdy shoes: the sand is loose and the crater stairs are steep.
